What
does Suvadra do?
A home for physically handicapped children was established
in Bhaktapur on January 1, 2006. The handicapped are a forgotten
group within Nepal. Basic care for these children is very
minimal. In addition, Suvadra also helps children incidentally,
(one-time basis) in extreme situations. We also organise
free medical check-ups in one of the nearby villages in
Nepal. Suvadra makes sure that children get the help they
need. When necessary other disciplines are consulted either
in The Netherlands or Nepal, such as doctors or physiotherapists.
Swarga
Swarga is the name of the children's home, which has
the primary function of caring for physically handicapped
children. Swarga also provides shelter for children who
need immediate help. Children from all over Nepal can apply
for a place in the home. Suvadra provides a place to live,
a place where children can be themselves and where they
will be accepted regardless of their handicap, problem or
background. They get the opportunity to go to school and
play just like ordinary children. A child gets attention,
love and if necessary, extra care (medical check ups, physiotherapy
or speech therapy).
Swarga
Daycare
Since April 2008 we established Swarga Daycare, which is
for children who have special needs beyond the capabilities
of the regular classes. These children are taught by a teacher
who has been educated by Suvadra, and they are given attention
which is specific to their learning needs. At the moment,
the class consists of four of our "own"children, Deepa,
Sabin, Rachita and Sunita but we plan to have children from
the surrounding area join the class in the future. There
is also opportunity for extra physiotherapy.
Individual help
Here are some examples of the aid provided by Suvadra:
medical help, education, training, medication, operation,
teaching and learning, speech therapy.
CP CAMP 2008
In contrast to our traditional healthcamp, in 2008
we organized a Cerebral Palsy camp in collaboration with
the CP Centre in Dhapakhel. Present were: Maartje (volunteer),
Lata (our own physiotherapist), Dr. Gunther Gross-Selbeck
(German Neurologist), Claudia Gross-Selbeck (physiotherapist
specialized in CP children), and two physiotherapists from
the CP Centre. They were here on September 24-25, and they
treated 17 children. The next step is that the parents of
those children will return to be advised on how we can help
them further. A few of these children will visit Suvadra
daily for physiotherapy beginning in January.
Healthcamp 2007
We held a healthcamp in Sudal on December 22. From 10am
until 3pm 235 children were examined, and those who needed
treatment received free medication. Problems found included
the flu, skin infections and worms. Four doctors, ten nurses
and several volunteers from the village, from Hands of Suvadra
en Buddha Jyoti Youth Club made this day a huge success.
All leftover medications were donated to a nearby health
post. There were also seven cases which required further
testing and perhaps a single visit in the future.
